June 16-17 (Sat-Sun)
Mono Lake Carcamp (M)
On Saturday, we'll hike the south shore past shallow pools, springs, and groves of buffaloberry. The next day, we'll circumnavigate the Panum Crater volcano then hike to Rush Creek and along it to the lakeshore for a swim. Camp on Saturday night in nearby pines. Expect cool weather, rushing streams, and wide views of desert and the Sierra. Note: Participants must stay behind the leader to facilitate wildlife viewing. If you cannot, please choose another trip. Limit 15.

Beginner Backpack Seminar (E)

Come before the Summer Picnic to learn basics of selecting and fitting backpacks, tents, and boots; and how to select a campsite, stay dry and comfortable, cope with emergencies, and be environmentally responsible hikers. Limit 12.

Desert Survivors Summer Picnic (E)
Tilden Park, Berkeley
Our traditional summer event begins at 11 a.m. Enjoy a potluck meal and desert stories (or tall tales). We'll erect the badminton net in the adjacent sunny meadow. Late in the day, we'll hike the ridge to stretch our legs. It's a great opportunity to meet fellow members in the outdoors and perhaps find new hiking partners. Telescope Peak Carcamp (M/S)
Death Valley National Park
Meet at the charcoal kilns for a moderate hike to Wildrose Peak. The valley weather will be sweltering, but we'll be comfortable camping at 8000' Mahogany Flat. Saturday we'll make the 14-mile round trip to the peak to see one of the most spectacular vistas in the world. Badwater in Death Valley is 11,000' below. Sunday we'll visit the Eureka Mine and Auguberry Point, and if time permits, Darwin Falls. Limit 15.

Backpack the High Toiyabe Range (S)
Arc Dome Wilderness, Central Nevada
Explore the east side of the Toiyabe Range, crossing an 11,194' peak between South Twin Creek and Jett Creek. The canyons have water for our campsites; temperatures should be comfortable; views east and west across the Great Basin are guaranteed to be spectacular. Using a car shuttle, our trip will be one-way, starting at 6100', with a total distance of 19 miles, some on trail and some cross-country. Limit 12.

Furnace Creek White Mountains Backpack (M)
Southeastern Mono County
South of Dyer, Nevada, Furnace Creek is a beautiful stream, threatened by plans to rebuild a road that washed out in the 80s. We'll backpack up the creek on Saturday, do a day hike beyond the head of the canyon to Tres Plumas Flats on Sunday, and backpack out on Monday. Limit 12.

Desert Survivors Technical Seminar (E)
Mt. Diablo State Park
An all-day seminar covering trip planning, route-finding with map/compass, and introduction to wilderness first aid. Both hikers and potential trip leaders will benefit. At the end, we'll do a short hike to test our map and compass skills. A longer hike afterward is optional. A detailed flyer will be sent to the membership before the event. Advance registration is required. Space is limited. A $5 donation will be requested.

Leave No Trace (LNT) Training Backpack (S)
North Fork American River, Placer County
Learn new techniques to minimize your impact on the environment during this stunning canyon backpack. The seven principles of LNT will be discussed as we follow the historic Big Granite Trail down 3800' about 7 miles to the river. Here we can swim and explore Big Granite Canyon. Please, only experienced backpackers capable of strenuous hiking; easier LNT training trips in the future. Limit 12.

Pescadero Creek Beginner Backpack (E/M)
Coast Range, San Mateo County
From Sam McDonald Park, hike through redwoods to the Patriarch Grove with lunch at the Sierra Club Hikers Hut, then watch the meandering of Tarwater Creek. Cool weather and light packs will make it easy to test our outdoor skills. Campfire and happy hour at Shaw Flat trail camp. Limit 8.

Mines, Cabins, Springs & Scenery Backpack (M/S)
Inyo Mountains, Eastern Inyo County
This trip features a modest pace with short daily distances, poor trails, one dry camp, and steep, rugged terrain. Cooler temperatures at the high elevations, no bears, and an escape from civilization into the mining world of the early 20th Century. The total distance is 24 miles, some on trail and some cross-country. Total elevation gain 9000'. 4WD needed to reach trailhead, but carpooling should be possible. Limit 12.

Bodie Hills Carcamp (M)
Northern Mono County
The gold camp of Bodie became the largest town between Denver and San Francisco by 1879. Despite fires and the ravages of time, much of the old town remains. We'll tour the historic ghost town on Friday and camp in a nearby aspen grove. Saturday, we'll make a rugged hike along Rush Creek past an old sheep-herder camp with historic carved aspens. Sunday, we'll hike along the north shore of the lake or visit Panum Crater. Limit 15.

September 1-3 (Sat-Mon)
Hays Canyon Range Carcamp (M)
Northwestern Nevada
Three days of hiking in obscure mountains at the Nevada border. Hikes to Pegleg Canyon, Cherry Creek, and Bud Brown Cabin, elevations 4500' to 6800'. Check out springs, shaded canyons, and peaks with long views. Some trails and jeep trails on plateaus and hills with sagebrush, bitterbrush, and mountain mahogany. The air should be cool and refreshing. A late full moon will brighten the night sky. Note: Participants must stay behind the leader to facilitate wildlife viewing.
