SUMMER 2004 TRIPS

1.   June 25-27 (Fri-Mon)
      Mount Dubois Backpack (S)
      Western Nevada

This is the last in a series of trips to the most rugged peaks in the White Mountains. We'll take the classic Tabor route, hiking up Middle Creek and camping on a waterless ridge at 11,000'. The next day we'll dayhike to 13,559' Mt. Dubois and enjoy the stupendous view and the weird high alpine world of the Whites. On day three we'll backpack out Chiatovich Canyon back to the cars. Carry most or all water. Limit 12.

Please sign up in advance. Limit 12.

3.   June 26 (Sat)
      Summer Picnic (E)
      Desert Trail Celebration

This year's summer picnic will be a all-day affair at a member's house in Fairfield, punctuated by an evening slideshow illustrating our Nevada Desert Trail Relay. The event will start with Bob Lyon's traditional "Beginning Backpack Seminar" (see above entry), followed by a potluck meal and barbecue. Enjoy good desert stories and tall tales with your fellow members. Later we'll hike in a nearby park to take in the sunny Solano countryside. At night, the slideshow. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow members and perhaps find new hiking partners. Watch for the detailed flyer that will be sent to members.

 4.   July 3-5 (Sat-Mon)
       Little High Rock/Mahogany Monitoring (M)
       Northwestern Nevada Carcamp

This monitoring trip will visit Mahogany Mountain and Little High Rock Canyon west of the Black Rock Desert. We'll hike to the top of Mahogany on the first day. We'll go down Little High Rock's deep lava trench on the second; hike elsewhere on the third. Cliff rock and high elevations will ameliorate summer heat. Expect antelope, wild horses, good birds. We'll take notes and photographs for a monitoring report. Note: This is a wildlife viewing and monitoring trip. Participants must stay behind the leader while hiking. If you cannot do this, please choose another trip.

5.   July 24-26 (Sat-Mon)
      Mount Jefferson Backpack (M/S)
      Toquima Range, Central Nevada

These mountains are classics of the basin and range province of Nevada. The journey begins along a stream and then ascends to a high central ridge with views 60 to 80 miles in all directions. From the cooler elevations we look down on forests, meadows, and finally the heat of the plains. The journey is 18 miles, partly cross-country, with a gain of 5000' in the first two days. Suitable for learning backpackers who are in good physical condition. Limit 12.

6.   July 17 (Sat)

This all-day seminar features instruction in trip planning, route finding with map and compass, and an introduction to wilderness first aid. Both hikers and potential trip leaders will benefit from the knowledge gained. We'll spend an hour on each topic, with an hour's break for lunch. In late afternoon we'll do a short hike to test our map-and-compass skills. A longer hike afterward is optional. A detailed flyer will be sent to the membership well before the event. You must register beforehand to attend. Space is limited. A $5 donation will be requested at the site.

7.   July 24-25 (Sat-Sun)
      Fox Range Monitoring Carcamp (M)
      Northwestern Nevada

On this two-day carcamp, we'll visit an isolated wilderness study area north of Pyramid Lake to hike three canyons: Bull, Coyote, and Willow. Elevations range from 4000' to 6000'. There'll be shade in the canyons and juniper trees on the ridges, plus some springs. We'll monitor the WSA for cattle damage, ORV intrusions, and other abuses. If there's time, we'll stop at Pyramid Lake on the way back for a cooling swim. Note: This is a wildlife viewing and monitoring trip. Participants must stay behind the leader while hiking. If you cannot do this, please choose another trip.
