Desert Views-The Deserts of the American West reveals the beauty of the
deserts through the eyes of some of Santa Barbara's finest artists. Members of
the Oak Group, California Art Club, and the Santa Barbara Art Association
present their expansive yet intimate views of remote areas in the Mojave,
Great Basin, Colorado, and Sonoran deserts of the American West.
Desert Views is an exhibit of ten artists' passion for vistas that encompass
tiny wildflowers, distant mountains, and vast skies. Independent curator and
participating artist Robert Dycus brings together the work of painters Todd
Anderson, John Comer, Michael Drury, Hank Pitcher, Dan Reeves, Skip Smith, and
Sarah Vedder, and photographers Rick Burri and Bill Dewey for this unique
exhibit.
The beauty, vitality, and mystery of the desert come through in the blinding
light, receding mountain ranges, eccentric plants, and unimaginable blue skies
on canvas and paper. The deserts are full of contrasts - seemingly empty lands
that are as rich in flora, fauna, and history as they are in subject matter.
These artists explore and capture a land that was surveyed a scant 150 years
ago. Their works expose the tremendous variety and allure of landscapes often
disregarded as empty wastelands.
