BrightSource Inc wants to turn one of California’s last undisturbed wildlife habitats, the beautiful Ivanpah Valley, into a utility-scale industrial solar plant over 5 miles square.

Hundreds of baby tortoises would be ground to a pulp beneath the wheels of heavy equipment.

Meanwhile, a national movement is developing an alternative to the big corporate central-station power model. It's called Community Solar and it's embodied in many local solar initiatives from coast to coast.
