DESERT SURVIVORS
Groundhog Day Party
There once was a desert in a faraway land,
Where nights smelled of incense by a river so grand,
Where days smelled of flowers and crops rising tall,
While from swaying palm trees, sweet fat dates they would fall.
Sour oil now runs freely in pipes to accounts
Of colonial schemers protected by louts.
Cluster bombs and TV are now making the rules,
In a desert destroyed for a wasteland of fools.
We'll gather for a potluck dinner, slides, and conversation on this
winter night as the desert turns toward Spring. Meet your fellow
Survivors and plan trips for the future. Our Spring 2004 Trip Schedule
will be ready, loaded with new trips for a new hiking season. Join
your fellow members at our annual Farewell-to-Winter/Hello-to-
Spring celebration.

DIRECTIONS to Sheryl Schindler's studio: 30 Cleveland Street, San
Francisco (between 6th & 7th, in the South of Market area)
Note: This venue has no seating and features hardwood floors. Bring
your own chair, or better yet, a piece of rug or a blanket something
that won't scratch the floor. Also, be advised that we will organize a
clean-up crew at the end. And two new requests from our hostess,
please: NO spike heels (they damage the floor), and keep the
packaging of your foodstuffs to a minimum (though we will have a
garbage haul at the end).
From the East Bay: Get off at the 5th Street exit and take the left split
at the bottom of the ramp onto Harrison Street. Proceed 2 blocks to 7th
Street, turn right. Go half a block and turn onto Cleveland Street.
From the South Bay: Take 101 and get off on the 7th Street exit and
take the left split at the end of the ramp which put you onto 7th Street.
Go through the light which is at Harrison Street and go one-half block
to Cleveland Street and turn right.
From the North Bay: Go over the Golden Gate Bridge and drive
through San Francisco to downtown via Van Ness Avenue. Cross over
to 10th Street, then take a left at Folsom. Cleveland is near the corner
of 7th and Folsom, but 7th is one-way. Park where you can.
The front door to 30 Cleveland is right on the street. Look for a Desert
Survivors sign in the window and on the door. Park where you can.
There are no nearby parking lots, but good street parking may be had
until 7:30 or 8:00pm when the streets fill up with night club visitors
(this is San Francisco's famous "club district").
VIA PUBLIC TRANSIT: This is a venue where public transit works
well. You can take BART from the east side of the Bay, or within San
Francisco the MUNI bus or streetcar. The nearest BART station is
beneath Market Street at the Civic Center, and busses and streetcars
run on Market Street. Exit either at the Civic Center and walk south
down 7th Street three and one-half blocks to Cleveland Street.
