                Nevada Desert Trail Relay 2005
(Second Half, 1st half completed in 2004)

Having hiked the first 312 miles of the Nevada Desert Trail in 2004, Desert Survivors will complete the remaining 340 miles this year in a relay of 13 trips over six  weeks. Seven of the trips pass through statutory wilderness areas, either BLM or National Wildlife Refuge. Wildlife anticipated on many trips includes wild horses,  burros, deer, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, and raptors. To sign up for a trip or for further information, call the leader listed for each segment. Hikers may combine segments for longer trips. Limit 15 on these trips unless otherwise stated. Join us on some of Nevada's greatest desert wildlands while spring wildflowers are at  their finest!

12. May 7-9 (Sat-Mon)
Segment Q
      Carson/Wildhorse Backpack (M)

Segment Q starts in the Carson Sink near Lovelock and runs 21 miles, half in the valley and half in the hills, from the sand dunes on the shore of the Sink to the  top of 6194' Wildhorse Peak. A water cache halfway keeps weight low. Contact Leader: Steve Tabor (510) 769-1706

13. May 10-11 (Tue-Wed)
Segment R
      Humboldt Crossing Backpack (M)

Segment R, 19 miles, crosses the Humboldt River bottom lands west of Lovelock and south of I-80. Hiking is on flat ground but may require bushwhacking and the  wading of river or swamp, depending on spring runoff. This is a high-wildlife area, a fascinating well watered zone in the midst of desert. If water is too high, we'll  do the route on roads.

14. May 12-15 (Thu-Sun)
Segment S
      Trinity/Bluewing Backpack (M)

Segment S runs 33 miles, first north then west from the Humboldt River and I-80, ending with 15 miles across huge Granite Springs Valley. The route traverses the  Trinity Range, climbing 7337' Trinity Peak. Great views, good wildlife, a wonderful sense of open desert on the crossings. Lowry Well at the halfway point has good  water and is a wildlife Mecca.

15. May 16-17 (Mon-Tue)
Segment T
      Sahwave Range Backpack (S)

Segment T runs 17 miles, ascending the Sahwave Range on a cross-country route and ending on wild burro trails. Good shade from juniper trees, cool breezes at  high elevation, great views across Granite Springs Valley throughout the hike. Water in two places, enough for both days.
Contact Leader: Bob Lyon (415) 674-6885

16. May 18-19 (Wed-Thu)
Segment U
      Black Mountain Backpack (M)

Segment U, 19 miles, continues over Black Mountain, camping on the crest, to a spring providing water on the second day. We then cross Kumiva Flat to the  center of Kumiva Valley. Hiking to the crest is steep but not difficult. The view of Kumiva from the summit is not to be missed.
Contact Leader: Bob Lyon (415) 674-6885

17. May 20-22 (Fri-Sun)
Segment V
      Kumiva Peak Backpack (S)

Segment V, though only 15 miles, is outstanding. The route is steep and rugged. After a long approach across Kumiva Valley to a spring, the climb to the crest is  unrelenting. At 8237', Kumiva Peak stands more than 3000' above its base. Great camping on top with panoramic views. Water on the third day at Dollar Meadow.
Contact Leader: Bob Lyon (415) 674-6885

18. May 23-26 (Mon-Thu)
Segment W
      Selenite Range Backpack (M)

Segment W runs 33 miles along the Selenites to the Black Rock Desert, the first third on jeep trails, the last third on a wild horse trail. The middle part is mostly  cross-country and climbs Selenite Peak (7115'). Most hiking is above 5000'. Water from springs the first two days; great views of the Black Rock on the last day.
Contact leader: Paul Menkes (510) 525-9347

19. May 27-30 (Fri-Mon)
Segment X
      Black Rock Crossing Backpack (M)

Segment X continues on Memorial Day weekend crossing the Black Rock Desert. On Friday we dayhike from Bordello Hot Spring to Trego Hot Spring, sampling both.  Then we backpack 36 miles across the playa to Black Rock Hot, Double Hot, and Wheeler Reservoir, following the path of the pioneers. A support group will meet  us at Black Rock Hot, after the first third of our hike, with fresh water and treats.
Contact Leader: Bob Ellis (510) 525-8742

20. June 1-3 (Wed-Fri)
Segment Y
      Pahute Peak Backpack (S)

Segment Y, 26 miles, crosses the north end of the Black Rock and climbs over 8694' Pahute Peak. This route is a lot of work, but well worth it -- outstanding  views, colorful volcanic rocks, wildlife, aspen and white-bark pine groves, and five springs. See the Black Rock from 4500' above! Limit 12.

21. June 4-5 (Sat-Sun)
Segment Z
      Box Canyon Backpack (M)

Segment Z goes 13 miles, from Soldier Meadow Road, up Box Canyon, and across High Rock Lake to High Rock Canyon. Cliffs frame both sides; 500' of basalt now  blocks the end. Bighorn gaze from the cliffs and wild horses wander in and out. High Rock Lake may or may not have water. An old homestead remains near the  lake shore. Limit 12.

Segment BB runs 35 miles through Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge from Cottonwood Spring, across drainages and over high lava plateaus to Virgin Valley  Campground – mostly cross-country with some jeep and animal trails. Sagebrush, aspen, seasonal ponds, willow-choked canyons, great views, outstanding wildlife  plus wildflowers. Water every day.
Contact Leader: Steve Tabor (510) 769-1706

24. June 17-19 (Fri-Sun)
Segment CC
      North Border/Celebration Carcamp (M)

Segment CC is a series of dayhikes to the Oregon border using Virgin Valley Campground in the Sheldon Refuge as a base. We'll use car shuttles to do the three  hikes (28 miles) that remain. Enjoy warm waters at Virgin and Bog Hot Springs, party at the campground in the evening, and join our celebration completing the  Desert Trail Relay in the Sheldon's best season for flowers and wildlife.
